Part
3: You can provide discounts on drugs not on the list of CMS approved
drugs for Part D.
What is the best Part D drug plan on the market? While many carriers
lay claim to having the best formulary, lowest co-pays, some level of
coverage in the donut hole (also referred to as the coverage gap), in
the end, the best solution covers your client’s drugs. If a drug
is not covered by the plan, it can dramatically increase the out-of-pocket
costs for your client.
But what options do you have if no Part D plan covers your client’s
drug because the drug is not approved by CMS? There are certain classifications
of drugs that CMS hasn’t approved meaning no Part D coverage is
available. These include:
|
Drugs not approved for Part D
|
Weight Loss/Gain |
Hair Growth |
Over-the-Counter |
Barbiturates |
Benzodiazepines |
Cold Relief |
Fertility |
|
Fortunately, there are solutions available. Remember the discount cards
that were available prior to Part D? They remain available for drugs
not approved by CMS for the Prescription Drug Program. Let’s take Benzodiazepines as
an example. Valium, Stesolid, Diazemuls, Seduxen, Bosaurin, Diapam, Antenex,
Ducene, Apozepam and Pax are all brand name drugs for Diazepam which
is a Benzodiazepine. The cost for these drugs can be quite expensive.
Retail cost for Valium is roughly $250 per month.

non-covered drugs. The sales process is easy. Simply go to
