Annual Disenrollment Period

With the Annual Disenrollment Period (ADP) approaching January 1 (didn’t the AEP just start?) and sanctions on several of the top Medicare Advantage carriers, the opportunities for Medicare Supplement sales during the ADP will be numerous.

What is the Annual Disenrollment Period?

Starting in 2011, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP) that used to run from January 1 to March 31 is no more. The Health Care Reform bill eliminated the OEP and replaced it with an Annual Disenrollment Period that runs from January 1 to February 14.

During the ADP a beneficiary can only disenroll from a Medicare Advantage plan (either an MA-only plan, or an MA-PD) and enroll in Original Medicare. Clients who are interested in picking up drug coverage will have a Part D Special Enrollment Period to enroll in a PDP.

Beneficiaries cannot switch MA-PD plans nor can people in Original Medicare use the ADP to join a Medicare Advantage plan. Beneficiaries can only use the ADP to disenroll from a Medicare Advantage plan.
