How to Switch Your Clients From MA Plans to Med Supps During the Annual Disenrollment Period

During the Annual Disenrollment Period (ADP), which begins January 1, 2011, beneficiaries will have the option to disenroll from their Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare — with the option of purchasing a Medicare Supplement and/or Part D.

The following information will help you assist MA members with the transition from MA to Med Supp from January 1 to February 14 when the ADP ends.

For Med Supp sales to MA clients during the ADP:

1. Complete the MA section on the Medicare Supplement application

2. Send one of the following with the application:

  • A copy of the applicant’s MA plan’s disenrollment notice
  • A copy of the letter the applicant sent to the MA plan requesting disenrollment
  • A signed statement that the applicant has requested to be disenrolled from the MA plan

The effective date of the disenrollment is the first day of the following month after the MA organization receives the completed disenrollment request. So if the disenrollment request is received January 19, the disenrollment would be effective February 1.
