Acquisition gives Humana a stronger presence in rural areas.

Humana Inc. announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Arcadian Services, a Medicare Advantage HMO with approximately 64,000 members in 15 U.S. states.

Most of Arcadian members reside in small or medium-sized communities across the U.S., giving Humana a much stronger presence in rural areas. Arcadian also offers Humana an opportunity to grow their Medicare enrollment, and with Humana’s long experience working with Medicare beneficiaries enables them to better serve Medicare members.

The acquisition is expected to close in late 2011.

This is just the latest acquisition in 2011. In June Aetna bought Genworth’s Medicare Supplement business and CVS Caremark acquired Universal American’s Part D business. Don’t be surprised to see more consolidation in the future.

Senior Market Sales works with four of the top five Medicare Advantage carriers and all of the top five companies for Part D.
