Medicare Answers: Part D and Hospice Care

An agent recently asked about hospice care and Part D prescription plans.

Q. I’m losing a client that has gone on hospice care with terminal cancer. The question is, does she need to keep her Part D prescription plan any longer?

A. Good question! There are recent regulations affecting drugs prescribed while a client is in hospice. I believe any maintenance drugs she was on would not be covered by Part D. Any newly prescribed drugs or continuation of drugs for the management of the terminal and related conditions would be covered under Part A. CMS provided guidance in March, 2014. It is always good to confirm with the provider as it appears there are limited exceptions where Part D may apply.
