The Betty James Travel Insurance Strategy

In travel insurance, there’s something called the "Betty James travel insurance strategy.” You might consider using this strategy to help some of your clients — or become an affiliate and send them our way, so we can help them.

The Betty James travel insurance strategy is named for a woman whose remarkable travel insurance story — one of our favorites — was published by International Travel News in 2010. After breaking her hip on a cruise ship deck and incurring $80,000 in medical and transportation costs, Betty never received a single bill because of the $154 travel insurance she’d purchased from Travelex Insurance Services.

The strategy is simple: purchase a packaged travel protection plan without the trip cancellation benefit. To eliminate trip cancellation coverage, all you do is enter $0 for the trip cost insured when you are getting your travel insurance quote. With $0 trip cost insured, you will not have trip cancellation coverage, but you will have all of the other travel protection benefits the policy has to offer beginning on your trip's day of departure. The most sought-after benefits when utilizing this strategy are for sickness and accident medical coverage and emergency medical evacuation, plus the additional benefits that packaged travel insurance plans provide such as baggage protection, baggage delay, travel delay and more depending on the plan.
