Who are the Top Medicare Advantage and Part D Carriers?

The 2011 Medicare Advantage and Part D selling season was shorter than ever this year, but it certainly wasn’t any less eventful. We witnessed carriers leaving the market (CIGNA), mergers (Bravo and HealthSpring), CMS sanctions (Aetna, Arcadian, and Universal American), and some very aggressive moves by the largest carriers (Humana and United Healthcare).

So, with all of the maneuvering and all the changes, who came out on top? If you look at the top MA and Part D carriers in 2011, you’ll see that SMS means it when we say we “Run with the Best.” We represent all five of the top five Part D companies and three of the top five MA companies as shown below.

Starting in 2012 carrier bonuses will be based on those quality ratings, so the carriers with the highest quality get paid more—allowing them to offer richer benefits and remain more competitive.
